That depends on your needs. We happen to think both models are pretty amazing! The most important thing to consider is- will you be wearing a newborn or small baby (under 20 lbs)? If the answer is yes, then you'll need the Hydrogen. If the answer is no, then either carrier will work for you. Otherwise it comes down to your personal preferences. The Hydrogen will allow you to have fun prints, a chest clip, hood, and a slightly higher weight limit. The Lite has a lower cost with solid colors, and is a little floppier without that infant insert. You can always add a chest clip, hood, and Strap Wraps if you would like them!
In the Hydrogen you may begin back carrying using the harness at 4 months (or later if you feel more comfortable). You will want to ensure that your baby is being worn high on your back, and snuggly to your body. Just like when you wear on your front, you want the carrier to support baby's spine to help maintain an open airway. When your child fits the carrier without the harness (knees come to the edge of the seat and can dangle freely, and the carrier doesn't come past the bottom of their ears) then you may back carry without the harness. Why is this different from other carriers? Because of our unique design. The built-in harness allows you to safely boost your baby without any fear of shifting that you wouldn't be able to see with a separate insert. The thin and floppy design of the carrier, and the smaller cinching shoulder straps, allows for proper torso support.
In the Lite, you may begin wearing on your back as soon as your child fits (since this carrier doesn't have a built-in harness it will not fit until the child is older and 20 lbs).
It is going to be necessary to clean your carrier from time to time, after all it is intended to be used often and little ones are experts at getting things dirty. Avoid letting your child eat or drink in the carrier to avoid unnecessary spills or stains. It is best to spot treat your carrier with a damp cloth and cool water to remove dirt or stains and then lay it flat to dry. If it is necessary to wash the entire carrier you will need to place it in a pillow case and wash it alone with cold water. Do not use bleach. Lay flat to dry, do not dry in the dryer. You may use a warm iron if necessary, taking care to avoid the webbing and buckles.
That's one of the great things about our design- just ignore it. Fasten the harness to the back panel of your carrier (as if you put your baby inside of it) and now you can use the carrier without the harness. Out of sight, out of mind.
